Building A Deck,The Basics

build a deckWhen you begin to contemplate landscape design ideas it is highly likely that you think about creating the ultimate deck. While building a deck won’t likely get done in a weekend it is the type of project that the do-it-yourselfer often is most proud of.

The decks that are being dealt today make outdoor living much like indoor comfort in that they become extra rooms and almost serve as extra living space, exposing the inhabitants to the wonderful sounds and scents of nature.

A well-built deck is a well-designed day and begins at the floor level of an adjacent indoor room. As you begin to think how you want your deck to look, remember that the design and layout needs to be right for you to be happy with the final product. Consider the privacy your deck will provide to your family and guests.

Decks are often raised above the ground and it is easy to have everyone on stage if you don’t properly plan. Railings, planters and benches should mirror the architectural style of your home. Gardening planters should be easily accessible and provide an accent rather than dominate the decor of your deck.

One of the most often forgotten details when building a deck is failure to check with your local building department. Most communities require securing a permit for building a deck. You will be excavating some ground and you will need to know where utility lines may be as well as cable and plumbing.

This is where hiring contractors may be to your advantage, as contractors will submit plans and drawings to the local building code enforcement departments. Once your plan is approved you will be ready to order your lumber, a few refreshments and a group of your closest friends for a weekend of building your deck
